Spring football is back and it’s better than ever! The United Football League, a merger of the XFL and USFL, has returned for another season of thrilling matchups. With all eight franchises in action this past weekend, the league is already shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent memory.
Battlehawks Soar to the Top
The St. Louis Battlehawks are quickly becoming the face of spring football. With a record of 8-4 since the start of 2023, including their XFL mark, the Battlehawks are proving to be a force to be reckoned with. And it’s no surprise that they drew a crowd of over 40,000 at their home opener, the biggest documented attendance in modern pro spring football. Playing at The Dome at America’s Center, the former home of the NFL’s Rams, the Battlehawks have the perfect combination of talent and location to draw in fans.
Showboats Struggle in Memphis
While the Battlehawks are thriving, the Memphis Showboats are facing some challenges. UFL executive Daryl Johnston recently expressed concern over the team’s low attendance and lack of connection with the community. Despite a strong start in their Saturday home opener, the Showboats ultimately fell to the San Antonio Brahmas. But with plans already in the works for the 2025 season, the Showboats are determined to turn things around and win over the Memphis market.
McCarron and Garbers: NFL Bound?
Two quarterbacks to keep an eye on this season are A.J. McCarron and Chase Garbers. McCarron, a former backup for the Cincinnati Bengals, is off to a hot start with the Battlehawks and could potentially make his way back to the NFL at 33 years old. Meanwhile, Garbers, a former Las Vegas Raiders prospect, is making a name for himself with the San Antonio Brahmas. With a QB1 opportunity, he’s already thrown five touchdown passes and has yet to throw an interception.
