The Philadelphia Eagles have made a big move to bolster their secondary, bringing back cornerback Avonte Maddox on a one-year deal. The 2024 season saw Maddox released by the Eagles due to a high salary cap hit, but the team never lost sight of his potential and have now secured his return.

Maddox, who suffered a torn pectoral last season, only played in four games but made an impact with 12 tackles, two passes defended, and a forced fumble. He also returned for the Eagles’ Super Wild Card Weekend matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, recording seven tackles.

The 26-year-old has spent his entire NFL career with the Eagles after being drafted in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Pittsburgh. In 64 games, he has recorded 250 combined tackles, 31 passes defended, eight forced fumbles, and four interceptions.

The Eagles’ defense struggled in 2023, dealing with numerous injuries and finishing with the second-worst scoring defense and total defense in the league. With new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio at the helm, the team is looking to revamp their secondary and Maddox’s return is a step in the right direction.

This offseason, the Eagles have also added pass rusher Bryce Huff and linebackers Devin White, Zack Baun, and Oren Burks to their defense. They have also re-signed safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.

Summary:

The Philadelphia Eagles have re-signed cornerback Avonte Maddox on a one-year deal, solidifying their secondary for the upcoming season. Maddox, who was released due to a high salary cap hit, returns to a defense that struggled in 2023 but is looking to bounce back under new coordinator Vic Fangio. The Eagles have also made other moves to strengthen their defense, including adding pass rusher Bryce Huff and re-signing safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.
