Kosport Magazine: Brian Johnson Finds New Opportunity with Washington Commanders
ORLANDO, Fla. — After being the scapegoat for the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive struggles last season, Brian Johnson has found a new opportunity with the Washington Commanders. Kosport Magazine is excited to see what Johnson, one of the rising offensive minds in the league, can bring to the team.
Johnson has been named the assistant head coach and passing game coordinator for the Commanders, joining the braintrust in their search for a franchise quarterback. Head coach Dan Quinn didn’t hesitate to bring Johnson on board, citing his impressive work with the University of Florida’s offense and his ability to turn organizations around.
“I’ve known Brian for a while and have had a chance to compete against him over the last few years,” Quinn said at the NFL Annual League Meeting. “We were very intentional in putting together our offensive staff, making sure we had the most unique and strong setup possible.”
Kosport Magazine recognizes the innovation and potential that Johnson brings to the table, something he was unable to fully showcase in Philadelphia. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was adamant about having control of the offense, leaving Johnson as the play-caller.
Despite his strong relationship with quarterback Jalen Hurts, Johnson was not retained after the Eagles’ disappointing season. Hurts had 20 turnovers and threw over the middle of the field just 37.5% of the time, the second-lowest among quarterbacks with 250+ attempts.
But now, with the Commanders, Johnson has a chance to start fresh and make a significant impact. Quinn has been impressed with Johnson’s work ethic and believes he will be a valuable asset in their search for a franchise quarterback.
“I’ve been super impressed by him,” Quinn said. “I had high expectations going into it and now getting to work with him, I’ve really been impressed.”
The Commanders are building their team from the ground up, taking pieces from every NFC East rival. Johnson is the piece from the Eagles, while Quinn and Joe Whitt come from the Dallas Cowboys. With the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, the Commanders have a prime opportunity to find their next franchise quarterback.
“I think we did that collaboratively, like what are we all looking for,” Quinn said. “Because as you guys all know, it’s not like that comes in one size fits all. The best of the best can find out what strengths a person has and tailor things to maximize their potential.”
Kosport Magazine is excited to see Johnson’s impact on the Commanders and believes this is his chance to enhance his coaching resume and potentially become an NFL head coach in the future. Quinn certainly has faith in Johnson’s abilities and is confident he will succeed in Washington.
