Verstappen and Lambiase’s Dynamic Leads to Victory at Japanese Grand Prix
The Japanese Grand Prix saw Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing take home a dominant victory, leading a 1-2 finish for the team. But it wasn’t just Verstappen’s skill behind the wheel that secured the win – it was also the dynamic between him and his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, that played a crucial role.
During the race, a radio exchange between Verstappen and Lambiase caught the attention of viewers. Verstappen reported that his car was understeering at the start of his first stint, but then later moved towards a feeling of oversteer. Lambiase suggested making a change to the front wing level, to which Verstappen replied, “Yeah, maybe one or two clicks less is OK.” Lambiase then responded with, “I won’t say I told you so, but understood. Thank you.”
After the race, it was revealed that the pair had disagreed over the front wing level, which triggered the radio exchange. In the top three press conference, Verstappen explained how the message from Lambiase also helped motivate him.
“We had, not an argument, but he said, ‘are you sure you want to do this?’ I was pretty sure and it turned out to be wrong! But he was right,” Verstappen said. “In a way, it also fires me up because I am like, ‘even though I am not entirely happy with the balance now I will still try to be as consistent as I can be without shouting back at him.’ We have a great relationship and it works well like that.”
Verstappen’s victory at Suzuka was not just a result of his driving skills, but also the teamwork and communication between him and Lambiase. And this is not the first time their dynamic has been highlighted – it has become a theme of their relationship and has led to successful results.
Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has even referred to them as an “old married couple,” but believes their dynamic is what makes them a successful partnership.
“That is the old married couple coming out again!” Marko said. “There was a very long discussion before about how many clicks of the front wing we had to change. Max insisted and Gianpiero was happy when it turned out that he was right in the end.
“Max and his race engineer are very experienced, also together with the data engineer. They know what to do and they know what Max likes.
“It was more or less the right decision, we just had to make a small adjustment after the first stint, so during the first stop.”
Verstappen and Lambiase: A Winning Combination
The Japanese Grand Prix was a perfect example of the successful partnership between Max Verstappen and his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase. Their dynamic, often described as an “old married couple,” has led to consistent and impressive performances on the track.
Their communication and teamwork were crucial in securing Verstappen’s victory at Suzuka, and it’s clear that their relationship plays a significant role in his success. As Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko puts it, “Max and his race engineer are very experienced… They know what to do and they know what Max likes.”
Verstappen and Lambiase’s dynamic may not always be smooth sailing, but it’s clear that it’s a winning combination for the Red Bull team. And as Verstappen continues to dominate on the track, it’s safe to say that their partnership will only continue to grow and lead to more victories in the future.
