Leclerc Honors Mentor Jules Bianchi at 2024 Japanese Grand Prix
As the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix approaches, the Formula 1 community remembers the tragic loss of Jules Bianchi, who passed away in July 2015 from injuries sustained in a crash at the 2014 Japanese GP. Bianchi was not only a talented driver, but also a mentor and friend to many, including current Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc.
In an exclusive interview with Kosport Magazine, Leclerc shared his thoughts on the upcoming race and his tribute to Bianchi. “Of course it’s a very special place, and whenever I get here I have somewhere in my mind Jules,” said Leclerc. “I obviously think about Jules very often, because he’s been the person that helped me to get there.”
Leclerc and Bianchi’s families were close, and the young Monegasque driver credits Bianchi as a “game changer” in his career. In honor of his mentor, Leclerc will be wearing a helmet inspired by Bianchi’s design from his time at Marussia in 2014. The helmet also features Bianchi’s retired number 17, as designated by the FIA.
But Leclerc is not the only one paying tribute to Bianchi at Suzuka. Fellow French drivers Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly also shared their memories and admiration for Bianchi. Ocon described Bianchi as “the hope of French motorsport” and a potential world champion, while Gasly remembered him as an inspiration for young French drivers.
