Kosport Magazine: Hulkenberg Criticizes Alonso’s “Dangerous” Tactics at Australian Grand Prix
The Australian Grand Prix saw some intense battles on the track, but one incident in particular has caught the attention of the F1 community. Fernando Alonso, driving for Aston Martin, was handed a post-event drive-through penalty for his defensive tactics against George Russell of Mercedes. The penalty was later converted to a 20-second time penalty, but it has sparked a debate about the safety of such maneuvers.
Many were surprised by the severity of the penalty, but one driver in particular, Nico Hulkenberg, believes that Alonso was in the wrong. In an interview with Kosport Magazine, Hulkenberg expressed his disappointment with Alonso’s tactics, stating that they were “potentially dangerous.”
Hulkenberg, who is known for his defensive driving skills, believes that while such tactics are common in F1, the particular corner where Alonso made his move was not the right place to do so. He pointed out that the corner is narrow and has a blind exit, making it a risky move for both drivers involved.
The Haas F1 Team driver also raised concerns about the speed at which Alonso slowed down, stating that it was a “big delta” and could easily cause a driver to lose control of their car. He suggested that the configuration of Turn 6 should be looked at for future races.
Hulkenberg’s comments come ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, where the incident is expected to be discussed at the F1 drivers’ briefing. He also questioned the consistency of Alonso’s comments, as the Spaniard initially claimed to have throttle issues but later changed his stance.
Alonso, on the other hand, expressed his disappointment with the penalty, stating that he was simply trying to defend his position and did not feel that his actions were dangerous. He also expressed relief that Russell was unharmed in the incident.
The debate over Alonso’s tactics and the safety of such maneuvers is likely to continue, but one thing is for sure – the Australian Grand Prix has once again shown that F1 is a sport that demands both skill and strategy from its drivers.
