Marquez Reflects on His 12th Season in MotoGP
As Marc Marquez enters his 12th season in the premier class of MotoGP, the 31-year-old reflects on his journey since making his debut with Honda in 2013. In the first two races of the 2024 campaign, Marquez has found himself in intense battles with rookie sensation Pedro Acosta, leading to comparisons between the two riders.
Speaking about Acosta’s impressive form, Marquez acknowledges the fearlessness and lack of self-awareness that comes with being a young rider. He admits that this is something he can never recapture in the latter years of his career, but instead must rely on his experience and knowledge of the sport.
“When you’re younger, you don’t think too much about what you’re doing and sometimes that works in your favor,” Marquez explains. “But as you get older, you become more conservative in certain areas and rely more on your experience. Some people say that after my injury in 2020, I will come back stronger, but I know I will never be as fast as I was when I was younger. However, I can use my experience to my advantage.”
Marquez also acknowledges that he is not immune to making mistakes, as he is only human. But he believes that it is through these mistakes that he can continue to learn and improve as a rider. He also mentions his admiration for the top riders in the Ducati team and hopes to learn from them in order to stay competitive.
Reflecting on his own journey, Marquez acknowledges the natural progression of the sport, where young talents emerge and challenge the established riders. He recalls his own debut in 2013, where he was the young rider fighting against legends like Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo, and Dani Pedrosa. Now, he finds himself on the other side of the spectrum, competing against the next generation of riders.
“It’s a new experience, but it’s also a natural process of the sport,” Marquez says. “Everyone has their time at the top, and eventually, new riders will come and take over. It’s just the way it goes.”
