Ferrari Dominates the 2024 Australian Grand Prix with a 1-2 Finish

The 2024 Australian Grand Prix was a race to remember as Ferrari took the top two spots on the podium. After a disappointing start to the season, the Italian team showed their true potential with a dominant performance in Melbourne.

It was a race filled with drama and excitement, with Carlos Sainz making a stunning comeback after missing the previous race due to surgery for appendicitis. Starting from second on the grid, Sainz executed a brilliant overtake on polesitter Max Verstappen on lap two.

Unfortunately for Verstappen, his race came to an early end due to a right-rear brake failure. This opened the door for Charles Leclerc to follow Sainz home and secure a Ferrari 1-2 finish. It was a much-needed victory for the team, as it was their first non-Verstappen win since Sainz’s victory in Singapore last year.

The race was a complete turnaround from the 2023 Australian Grand Prix, where both Ferrari drivers failed to finish due to a crash and a penalty. This time, luck was on their side as the race ended with a red flag on the final lap, with the entire field finishing nose-to-tail.

The victory was especially meaningful for Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur, who had injured himself on the flight to Melbourne last year. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, a long-time friend of Vasseur, was happy to see his rival team and Italy celebrate the win.

In an interview with Kosport Magazine, Wolff said, “First of all, I’m happy for Ferrari. I’m happy for Fred. He deserves that. Last year, he had a tough time with the pressure of all of Italy on his shoulders. Now, he’s had a 1-2 finish and it’s well-deserved.”

Meanwhile, Mercedes had a disappointing race with both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell retiring due to a power unit failure and a crash, respectively. With Hamilton set to join Ferrari in 2025, Sainz’s future with the team is uncertain. He has been linked with a move to Mercedes, but Wolff says they are still considering their options.

As for the race itself, it was a thrilling and unpredictable event that showcased the true potential of the Ferrari team. With the season just beginning, it will be interesting to see if they can maintain this level of performance and challenge for the championship.

In the words of Wolff, “As much as I hate our situation, [Vasseur] deserves that. Ferrari deserves that. And Italy deserves it. Carlos deserves it – after not only the appendix, but also basically being told ‘You’re not here anymore’. And bang! You can see what some human power can do when it needs to.”

The 2024 Australian Grand Prix was a reminder that in the world of Formula 1, anything can happen. And with the rivalry between Ferrari and Mercedes heating up, we can expect more thrilling races and unexpected results in the future.
