Vinales secures victory in thrilling Portimao race

In a nail-biting MotoGP race at Portimao, Maverick Vinales clinched his first premier class victory on the Aprilia RS-GP. The Spaniard inherited the lead on lap 12 after Francesco Bagnaia’s mistake and held off challenges from Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin to win by just over a second.

Despite numerous podium finishes since joining Aprilia, Vinales had yet to showcase his full potential. The victory in Portugal marked a significant breakthrough for the rider as he described it as a “big relief.”

Reigning champion Bagnaia initially led the race but a crucial error saw him drop out of contention for the win. Vinales praised his ability to manage worn tires and keep the Ducatis at bay, ultimately securing victory in the sprint race.

While the win won’t count towards his overall tally, Vinales remains focused on achieving success in a full-length race to become a 10-time race winner in MotoGP. He could also make history by winning on three different bikes in the modern era of MotoGP.
