Melbourne F1 Race Sees Driver Strategy Challenges

The Grand Prix in Melbourne has always been a traditional one-stopper event, but this year, Pirelli decided to shake things up by introducing softer compounds – the C3, C4, and C5. The aim was to inject more excitement into the race by offering a wider range of strategic choices.

During Friday’s practice sessions, drivers like Nico Hulkenberg raised concerns about graining, describing the C5 as “no race compound.” Mercedes‘ George Russell also shared his thoughts, predicting that a one-stop strategy might no longer be the obvious choice.

Russell remarked, “I think this year with the softer tyres, it’s going to be difficult in the race. It was an easy one-stop in previous years, but it seems that’s not the case anymore. The track conditions were tricky, with plenty of graining reported up and down the pits.”

The shift in tyre compounds has caught the drivers off guard. Usually considered a qualifying race, Melbourne now presents a new challenge with the introduction of softer compounds.

Teams seemed to be cautious in their approach during practice sessions, opting to preserve the harder compounds for the race due to their resilience against graining. This strategic shift is indicative of the teams’ adaptation to the new tire challenges posed by Pirelli.
