Germany Changes Number 4 Jerseys to Avoid Nazi Symbolism

Kosport Magazine – Apr 1, 2024, 02:08 PM ET

The German Football Association (DFB) has announced that they will be changing the design of the No. 4 on Germany’s national team jerseys due to concerns that it resembled the symbol used by Nazi ‘SS’ units. This decision comes after the new kit debuted during Germany’s friendly match against France last month.

The DFB stated that they had thoroughly reviewed the numbers 0-9 and submitted the numbers 1-26 to UEFA for approval. However, they did not see any resemblance to Nazi symbolism during the creation process. Despite this, they have taken the comments seriously and do not want to provide a platform for discussions. As a result, they will be developing an alternative design for the number 4 and coordinating it with UEFA.

The controversy surrounding the number 4 on Germany’s jerseys arose when it was pointed out that the two fours together resembled the stylized SS symbol used by the Nazi Party’s Schutzstaffel group. This group was responsible for running concentration camps and carrying out mass killings during World War II.

Adidas, the official supplier of the DFB, has also taken action by removing the number 44 from their range of customization options. A spokesperson for Adidas stated that the design of the names and numbers on the jerseys was a joint effort between the federation and 11teamsports. They also emphasized that Adidas stands for diversity and inclusion and actively campaigns against xenophobia, anti-Semitism, violence, and hatred.

The use of the stylized SS symbol is banned in Germany today, and Adidas has made it clear that they strongly reject any suggestions that this was their intention. They have also stated that promoting divisive or exclusionary views goes against their values as a brand.

In conclusion, the DFB and Adidas have taken swift action to address the concerns raised about the number 4 on Germany’s jerseys. They have shown their commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion and have made it clear that they do not support any form of hatred or discrimination. The new design for the number 4 will be announced in the near future, and we can all look forward to seeing Germany’s national team continue to represent their country with pride and unity.
