After a strong performance in 2021 where he finished runner-up in the Moto2 championship, Fernandez has struggled to find similar success in the premier class since his debut in 2022.
In his first two seasons in MotoGP, Fernandez has only managed to secure one top-five finish and has had difficulty fulfilling the potential that fans saw in him while he was in the feeder series. However, in recent races during the 2024 season, he has shown a glimpse of his abilities by leading the Catalan Grand Prix sprint and finishing sixth in the main race aboard his Trackhouse Racing Aprilia.
With the recent news of Ducati promoting Marc Marquez to their factory team in 2025, the remaining seats in the Aprilia stable are filling up quickly. This leaves Fernandez with more options to stay with his current team for the upcoming season.
“I know what I want to do, I know I want to stay,” Fernandez stated at the end of last month in Barcelona, “I think it’s not the moment to speak about that. I think we have to wait two or three races more, but I can say that everything is on the good way.”
When pressed about the possibility of returning to Moto2 if given the opportunity, Fernandez confidently responded with a firm ”no.” He added, “We have some priorities before considering this.”
In the past, riders were able to make a name for themselves by performing well in the lower classes and earning a spot in the premier class. However, this is no longer the case as few riders have been able to return to MotoGP after a stint in Moto2.
Toni Elias, who won the 2010 Moto2 championship after being relegated from MotoGP the previous year, is one of the few to make a successful comeback. However, he only managed a best finish of eighth in his final season in the premier class.
