Zarco says outburst at Jerez MotoGP stewards was ‘unprofessional’

Zarco’s Fiery Outburst at Spanish GP Brings Consequence

The MotoGP world was buzzing after Johann Zarco’s outburst at the Spanish GP, where he voiced his frustrations towards Freddie Spencer, the chief steward of FIM. Zarco’s anger stemmed from a late-race collision with Aleix Espargaro, which ultimately resulted in a fiery confrontation in race control and a public criticism towards Spencer’s ability to do his job.

However, with the French GP approaching, Zarco met with the stewards again, with his LCR team announcing on social media that the meeting resulted in a positive outcome. Both parties discussed ways to enhance safety and review all incidents in the championship.

Zarco, in a pre-event press conference before the French GP, publicly admitted that his actions were unprofessional. He further explained that his meeting with the stewards was calmer and that there was no need to shout, but he still stood by his concerns regarding Spencer’s suitability for the job.

“I said that I was clearly not agreeing – and we do not agree – many times on different things,” Zarco said. “They try to study the things, and there are some intentions, and then there is also the comment of the riders. And that’s a bit complicated.”

The French rider also stated that he was able to express his feelings during the meeting, although he feels that the stewards’ attitude towards him and the incident was not respectful.

However, Zarco took responsibility for his outburst and acknowledged the inappropriate behavior towards the stewards. He also gave an insight into what exactly happened during the meeting.

“What was not professional on my side was to get a high voice [shout] during the meeting,” Zarco shared. “It was not necessary to do it, but after the crash and what happened and the way the meeting was happening, I needed to say those things.

“But this was not professional from my side. But I said to Freddie and the other marshals, they are free to take a decision, but it’s only Freddie who is speaking, and then they take the decision all three.”

Kosport Magazine’s Take:

Zarco’s fiery outburst at the Spanish GP may have had consequences in the form of an unprofessional attitude towards the stewards. Still, the positive outcome of his meeting with them shows that both parties are willing to address safety concerns and incidents in the championship.

But, despite taking responsibility for his actions, Zarco stands by his opinion that Spencer may not be the best person for the job. This situation highlights the complexities and difficulties in regulating and reviewing incidents that may arise in racing. However, with open communication and mutual respect, solutions and improvements for the safety of all riders can be achieved.
