Kosport Magazine – MotoGP French GP: Martin takes lead in FP1

Jorge Martin enters this weekend’s fifth round of the 2024 MotoGP campaign with a 17-point lead in the standings. Despite crashing out of the lead at the Spanish GP, Martin is determined to move 47 points ahead and extend his lead. Under perfect conditions, the 45-minute FP1 session saw Martin dominate with a 1m31.421s lap on a fresh soft rear tire.

The Pramac rider was one of the few to do so in FP1, leading the way by 0.237 seconds ahead of rookie Pedro Acosta on the Tech3 GasGas team. Aprilia’s Maverick Vinales completed the top three after a late time attack on a new medium rear, followed by Enea Bastianini and Francesco Bagnaia of Ducati.

Martin initially set the pace with a 1m34.162s, but it was Marc Marquez on the Gresini Ducati who took over with a 1m33.242s within the first five minutes of the session. The top spot swapped between Marquez, VR46’s Marco Bezzecchi, Bagnaia, and Bastianini.

With 10 minutes gone, Marquez held the top spot with a time of 1m31.971s, but Bastianini snatched it with a 1m31.914s with 18 minutes remaining. He then improved to 1m31.837s, which was short-lived as Acosta set a time of 1m31.658s, only to have it cancelled due to exceeding track limits. Acosta then legitimately moved to the top with a time of 1m31.658s in the closing moments.

Opting for a fresh soft rear tire in the final minutes, Martin delivered an impressive 1m31.421s lap, securing the fastest time of the session. Acosta maintained second place, despite a late scare at Turn 6 when he tucked the front of his GasGas-branded KTM. Vinales finished third with a time of 1m31.678s, followed by Bastianini, Bagnaia, and Alex Marquez on the Gresini team.

Aleix Espargaro of Aprilia was in seventh place, while KTM’s Brad Binder crashed at Turn 11 in the closing minutes. Marquez on the LCR Honda was the highest-ranked Honda in 16th place, while the factory team of Joan Mir and Luca Marini brought up the rear.

In 13th place, Alex Rins was the highest-ranked Yamaha, while teammate Fabio Quartararo had a low-key start at his home round on the M1’s new chassis with a 20th place finish.

Johann Zarco opened up his home race with a 16th place finish on the LCR bike, while Mir and Marini finished in last place for the factory team.
