Honda’s MotoGP Revamp: A Mission to Regain Dominance
For years, Honda has been a dominant force in the world of MotoGP. But in recent years, the Japanese manufacturer has faced a decline in results and the loss of star rider Marc Marquez to Gresini Ducati. This has prompted Honda to undertake a top-to-bottom revamp of its MotoGP operations, with the goal of regaining its position at the top of the pack.
The off-season saw significant changes within the Honda camp, as the team worked to change its philosophy and culture. However, the opening two rounds of the 2024 season in Qatar and Portugal showed that the challenge ahead is still a daunting one. Not only did all four Honda riders fail to break into Q2, but the bike also struggled in race trim, with 12th place being the best result across both races.
Team manager Alberto Puig acknowledged that Honda is not where it wants to be in terms of performance, but he remains determined to lead the team back to the front of the pack. “We are in a process of development,” Puig said. “We believe we are making progress, but at the same time, we believe the other teams have also made some progress.”
Puig also emphasized the team’s commitment to its mission, stating, “We didn’t catch up as much as we expected, but the only thing we know is that we are on a mission and our intention is clear. We are putting in a lot of resources and manpower to the project, and our riders can see that we are giving our best effort.”
Despite the challenges, Puig remains optimistic about Honda’s future. With the new system of concessions in place for 2024, Honda will have unlimited testing with race riders and more freedom with chassis and engine development. The team has also planned 22 private tests this year to test new parts and bring them to the race-spec bike as quickly as possible.
Puig believes that these changes, along with the team’s determination and resources, will lead to a major leap in performance in the second half of the season. “We are on a mission and we have targets,” he said. “We will not stop until we get there. By the summer, we hope to see some bigger steps or clear improvements.”
In the meantime, Honda continues to work on improving the bike’s rear contact grip, both on entry and exit. Puig is confident that with the team’s efforts and the concessions in place, Honda will be able to make significant progress and regain its dominance in MotoGP.
