Welcome to the Fast Lane: McLaren’s Progress in the 2024 F1 Season
As the 2024 Formula 1 season heats up, one team in particular has caught the attention of fans and experts alike. McLaren, under the leadership of team principal Andrea Stella, has made significant strides since the start of last year, with most of its gains coming from mid-2023 upgrade packages. These improvements have allowed the team to secure a fourth-place finish in the previous season.
But McLaren is not content with just a top-four finish. The team has set its sights on battling Mercedes for third place, although Ferrari’s impressive race pace improvements have made it a tough competitor to beat. However, McLaren’s first podium of the 2024 campaign, courtesy of Lando Norris, has given the team a taste of success and motivation to continue pushing forward.
The team’s 2024 challenger, the MCL38, has carried over some weaknesses from its predecessor. But Stella has assured fans that the team is working on addressing these issues, with plans to introduce a first upgrade package around the Miami or Imola rounds in May. However, he also cautioned that fully erasing these weaknesses, such as long-corner performance and a lack of DRS efficiency, will take another 12 months of development.
“We are extremely happy with the rate of development over the last 12 months, but there’s, I would say, another 12 months’ development that we need to go through to actually offer a car that is strong in DRS and is strong in the long corners,” Stella explained.
But this does not mean that McLaren is not performing well. Stella emphasized that the team’s weaknesses are a result of the time it takes to develop and add performance in all areas, especially with the budget cap in place. He also reassured fans that there is nothing going wrong at the factory and that the car is behaving as expected.
As the season progresses, McLaren is confident that it will continue to make strides and close the gap with its competitors. And with a strong team and determined leadership, there’s no telling what this underdog team can achieve in the future.
