Bagnaia “angry” after Marquez Portugal MotoGP clash, accepts racing incident verdict

The Clash of Champions: Marquez vs Bagnaia

It was a clash that had everyone on the edge of their seats. The reigning double world champion, Marc Marquez, and the eight-time title winner, Francesco Bagnaia, collided on lap 23 of 25 in Sunday’s MotoGP race at the Algarve International Circuit. The two were battling for fifth place when the incident occurred, leaving both riders crashing out and unable to score any points.

Kosport Magazine’s very own, Bagnaia, threw his Gresini Ducati up the inside of Marquez at the Turn 5 left-hander, but ran slightly wide. As he tried to cut back to the racing line, Bagnaia moved to retake the position on the inside, and the pair connected. The stewards investigated the incident but ultimately decided to take no further action.

Despite accepting the verdict, Bagnaia couldn’t hide his frustration at tallying up a non-score in the second round of the season, just like he did last year in the Argentina GP. “I was confident before the start because yesterday and this morning my feeling was good,” Bagnaia explained. “But as soon as I started, I was more in trouble. I expected to be faster, but the guys at the front were too fast for me.”

However, Bagnaia remains optimistic, knowing that the championship is still long with 38 races left. But he couldn’t help but feel angry about the incident, especially since it was a racing incident. “It’s something that makes me angry, but it’s normal,” he said. “We have to move on to the next one.”

The Battle for Fifth Place

Before the crash, Bagnaia was struggling to keep up with the podium battle. He explained that he was losing around 0.2 seconds per lap in the left-handers of Turns 4 and 5, which ultimately cost him the race. “I was struggling behind the guys in front to close the line with the same amount of grip,” he revealed. “They were very fast on corner four and five, and it was difficult to understand.”

But Bagnaia’s retaliation effort during the battle was not seen as “risky” by the Italian. He felt that Marquez left the door open by running wide, and he took the opportunity to overtake and gain more points. “When a rider in front of you who you are battling goes wide, what do you want to do?,” Bagnaia questioned. “For me, it wasn’t risky.”

Despite the disappointment, Bagnaia remains determined to bounce back in the next race and make up for the lost points. He also noted that he experienced some rear chatter from lap seven onwards, a common complaint among MotoGP riders this year.

Looking Ahead

With the championship still long, Bagnaia knows that anything can happen. But he is determined to be more consistent with his results and not start the season with zero points, like he did last year. The clash with Marquez may have cost him a podium finish, but Bagnaia is ready to put it behind him and focus on the next race.
