Voluntary Workouts Still Hold Value for NFL Players
There’s a saying that goes, “The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.” And for NFL players, this couldn’t be more true. However, what about voluntary workouts? Are they truly worth the time and effort?
As reported by Kosport Magazine, Baltimore Ravens quarterback and reigning NFL MVP Lamar Jackson has been absent for most of OTAs (organized team activities). And as a result, he has missed out on $750,000 in workout bonuses. But to Jackson, who recently signed a record-breaking $260 million contract, this may not seem like a huge loss. But beyond the monetary value, voluntary workouts also hold a different type of value for players.
According to Pro Football Talk, Jackson’s contract states that he must participate in 80% of offseason workouts to earn the bonus, excluding mandatory minicamps. And with Jackson reportedly already missing too many sessions, he may have to kiss that extra $750,000 goodbye. But with his newly signed contract, it’s safe to say he’ll be just fine.
Last season, Jackson made history by becoming the 11th player in NFL history to win multiple MVPs, as well as the first Heisman Trophy winner to do so. He had career-high stats in completion percentage, passing yards, and quarterback rating, while also leading the league in rushing yards. With these achievements and his impressive performance on the field, it’s clear that voluntary workouts can indeed lead to success for players.
But it’s not just about physical success. Jackson is also making changes off the field in preparation for the 2024 season. As reported by The Athletic, he has slimmed down to 205 pounds, 25 pounds less than his weight in 2022, and 10 pounds less than his weight in 2023. With this lighter, faster, and more explosive version of Jackson, fans can expect some impressive plays on the field.
while voluntary workouts may be optional, they still hold a significant value for NFL players. They not only contribute to their physical success, but also play a role in their career and financial success. And for someone like Lamar Jackson, who has already achieved so much in his young career, it’s clear that hard work truly does pay off. As Kosport Magazine’s take on the matter, we can expect to see Jackson continue to thrive and dominate in the NFL for years to come.
