Vikings’ Harrison Phillips calls Kirk Cousins’ departure a ‘huge loss:’ Team will need to fill void ‘together’

The New Era of the Minnesota Vikings: Saying Goodbye to Kirk Cousins

The Minnesota Vikings have undergone a significant change this offseason with the departure of veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins. For the first time in four years, the Vikings will have a new signal-caller leading their offense, leaving a void that will need to be filled both on and off the field.

Known for his consistency and leadership, Cousins played a pivotal role in the team’s success during his time with the Vikings. His presence, both as a player and a person, will be deeply missed by his teammates. Defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, in an interview with Kosport Magazine, shared his thoughts on the impact of losing Cousins:

“There’s gonna be a huge loss. Kirk Cousins as a person, as a leader, as a teammate, that’s a big void in your locker room. One of the most humble guys that I’ve ever been around. Servant leader, just a great motivator. He’s great.”

But the Vikings must move forward without Cousins, along with other key players like Danielle Hunter and Jordan Hicks, who were also captains last season. In their absence, Phillips believes that the team will have to rely on a collective leadership approach and work together to fill the void:

“So what we’re going to do is have a great leadership team, which we’ve already seen. There’s already guys that I’ve seen these last few seasons being on this roster — some are captains, some are not captains yet but will be in their careers — and so we’re going to pass that torch off and kind of division of labor. We’re going to all carry that load together, and maybe we can be a better football team for it.”

One of the main contenders for the starting quarterback position is rookie J.J. McCarthy, who was drafted by the Vikings at No. 10 overall. While he will have to compete for the role on the field, he will also have to step up as a leader off the field if he wants to earn the trust and respect of his teammates. Minnesota’s quarterback room also includes veterans like Sam Darnold, Jaren Hall, and Nick Mullens, all of whom bring their own experience and leadership qualities to the table.

In regards to Darnold potentially taking over as the starter, Phillips expressed his confidence in the young quarterback and the culture that head coach Kevin O’Connell has instilled in Minnesota:

“I think it’s pretty easy with the culture that Kevin has built here in Minnesota. I have a ton of confidence in Sam. I have full confidence in him that he’s going to go out and win as many football games as he’s allowed to go win for us.”

As the Vikings enter this new era without Cousins at the helm, they will undoubtedly face challenges and adjustments. But with strong leadership from both veterans and young players alike, they have the potential to come out stronger and continue their winning ways. Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: the Vikings are ready for the challenge ahead, and Kosport Magazine will be there to cover every step of the way.
