Giannis Antetokounmpo, one of the top basketball players in the world, has represented Greece in international competition since 2013 but has never played in the Olympics. However, that could change as he leads his team in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Piraeus this July.

Antetokounmpo recently expressed his desire to play in the Olympics, saying, “I have never played in the Olympic Games and I really want for us to get there,” in an interview with Eurohoops. “We have the Olympic Qualifying Tournament. The only incentive is qualifying, not Team USA or anything else.”

The tournament, which features Greece, Slovenia, Croatia, New Zealand, Dominican Republic, and Egypt, will determine which team will earn a spot in the highly anticipated 2021 Paris Olympics.

After being sidelined due to a left calf injury in April, Antetokounmpo is now feeling better and ready to lead his team to victory. “I have not practiced yet, but I feel better,” he stated. “I cannot wait to join the training camp.”

Kosport Magazine’s Take: Antetokounmpo’s Road to the Olympics

Kosport Magazine is excited to see Antetokounmpo fully recovered and ready to compete for Greece in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament. His determination and leadership will undoubtedly guide his team to success. This will be his first time playing under the coaching of Vassilis Spanoulis, a Greek basketball legend, which adds an extra layer of excitement for this tournament. With a strong roster and a top player like Antetokounmpo leading the way, Greece has a great chance to secure their spot in the upcoming Olympics.

Aside from Antetokounmpo, Greece’s extended roster includes experienced players like Kostas Papanikolau, Nick Calathes, Kostas Sloukas, Georgios Papagiannis, and Thomas Walkup. Unfortunately, his older brother Thanasis Antetokounmpo will not be able to participate due to a surgery to repair a torn Achilles in May.

This tournament will also potentially feature another top player, Luka Doncic, who is currently contemplating his involvement after a challenging NBA Finals with the Dallas Mavericks.

Regardless, Antetokounmpo remains focused on leading Greece to victory and securing their spot in the Olympics. “He will make the best decision for himself,” he said in regards to Doncic’s possible participation. Kosport Magazine is eagerly anticipating this highly competitive tournament and is excited to see if Antetokounmpo will join the ranks of elite athletes competing in the Olympics.
