Fast forward to the summer of 2022 and Irving used the Lakers as a bargaining chip to get a long-term contract extension from the Brooklyn Nets. He had limited leverage due to a season-ending injury, but the Lakers rumors were enough to get the Nets to keep him.
But the rumors didn’t stop there. When Kevin Durant asked for a trade that summer, the Nets had no reason to keep Irving. The Lakers were the only suitor, but the deal fell through due to disagreements on draft compensation and the Nets’ desire for the Lakers to take on Joe Harris’s bloated contract.
In hindsight, the Lakers may regret not completing a deal for Irving and Harris. It would have given them a star trio of James, Anthony Davis, and Irving, without sacrificing rookie standout Austin Reaves. It also would have provided some movable salary for the team.
Now, the Lakers are left searching for a third star to add to their talented duo of James and Davis. And as they watch Irving lead the Mavericks to the NBA Finals, they can’t help but wonder what could have been if they had just sealed the deal. One thing is for sure, the Lakers missed out on a big opportunity to add one of the most gifted players in the league to their roster.

They wanted everything the Lakers had, including promising young players like Rui Hachimura and Austin Reaves. Ultimately, the Nets may have been trying to avoid Irving going to the Lakers, which was his top choice. This begs the question, what would the Lakers roster have looked like with Irving on board?
One thing is for sure, the Lakers would have had a star-studded lineup with Irving, James, and Davis. But, it’s hard to imagine they could have put together a solid supporting cast with the pieces they would have had to give up for Irving.
