The Philadelphia 76ers have had their eyes on Jimmy Butler for quite some time now. Five years ago, they made the decision to trade him to the Miami Heat in a sign-and-trade, a move they have since regretted. However, they may have a chance to right that wrong as rumors suggest that the Sixers are planning for a potential reunion with Butler.

The Sixers’ Interest and Plans

If Butler were to force a trade from the Heat this summer, the Sixers would not only be interested, they would offer him a max extension, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Of course, this is all dependent on a lot of moving parts falling into place.

In order for this potential reunion to happen, a few things would need to occur. Firstly, the Sixers must not be able to sign Paul George in free agency. The Sixers have a significant amount of cap space this summer and are interested in pursuing George, who has a player option for next season and has yet to sign an extension with the Los Angeles Clippers.

According to reports, the Clippers have not offered George a max contract. If he becomes a free agent, the Sixers could offer him a significantly larger contract and a chance to play alongside stars like Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. This potential deal could sway George towards Philadelphia, but only time will tell.

Should the Sixers not be able to acquire George, they will turn their attention to Butler. However, for this plan to come to fruition, Butler would have to force the issue in Miami. Currently, he is under contract for $48.8 million next season with a player option for $52.4 million in 2025-26. However, he is seeking a two-year, $113 million max extension from the Heat.

If the Heat are not willing to meet Butler’s price, there is a chance he could become disenchanted and make things messy. While he has expressed a desire to stay in Miami, situations can change quickly in the NBA.

“I feel at home, man,” Butler told GQ earlier this month. “I really care about the city. I really care about the people in this city. Miami has embraced me. [They] want me to bring them something they haven’t done since LeBron, D-Wade, and C-Bosh in 2013. And I want to do that. So as soon as I get this knee back right, I’m right back on they [butt] and everybody know it.”

However, the Heat have stated that they have no plans to trade Butler. This could change if Butler’s contract situation becomes increasingly complicated and the Sixers are still interested, but for now, the Heat are not considering trading Butler.

Kosport Magazine’s Take

While a potential reunion between Jimmy Butler and the Philadelphia 76ers is certainly intriguing, it all depends on a lot of moving parts. The Sixers would have to miss out on signing Paul George and Butler would have to become unhappy in Miami. However, with the Sixers’ interest and potential for a max extension, the possibility of reunification is not out of the question. Only time will tell if this scenario becomes a reality, but it’s a situation worth keeping an eye on for Sixers fans.
