Kosport Magazine: Vince Carter and Chauncey Billups Headed to the Basketball Hall of Fame

It’s a moment that every athlete dreams of – being inducted into the Hall of Fame. And for two icons of the 2000s era of basketball, that dream has become a reality. Vince Carter and Chauncey Billups have been announced as part of the 2024 class for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

For Carter, the news was met with tears of joy and a sense of appreciation for the honor. “I have such a great appreciation for what this is and who is in the Hall of Fame. I get a chance to be a part of that,” he said. “Say what you want, believe what you may, but there were some days I never thought I was on this level. But they allowed me in, so I’m going to take it.”

The 13-member class also includes former Lakers, Grizzlies, and Warriors executive Jerry West, who was already inducted as a player and as a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic team. Other inductees include players Seimone Augustus, Michael Cooper, Walter Davis, Dick Barnett, and Michele Timms; coaches Charles Smith, Harley Redin, and Bo Ryan; broadcaster/coach Doug Collins; and owner Herb Simon.

The 2024 class will be enshrined into the Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, in August. For Carter, the moment is “mind-blowing.” He played 22 seasons in the NBA, the longest career in league history, and finished with 25,728 career points, good for 21st in league history. He was also the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1999 with the Toronto Raptors.

Billups, who is now the coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, was a five-time All-Star and won an NBA championship with the Pistons in 2004. He was the MVP of the Finals that season and is now joining his former teammate Ben Wallace, who was inducted into the Hall in 2021.

But it’s not just players who are being honored this year. 85-year-old Jerry West is being inducted as a contributor, after spending more than 20 years as an executive for the Lakers and helping the franchise win eight championships.

Other inductees include Seimone Augustus, a four-time WNBA champion with the Minnesota Lynx, and Michael Cooper, a five-time NBA champion for the Showtime Lakers in the 1980s.
