Snag on the Diamond: D-backs’ Moreno Out with Sprained Thumb

Arizona catcher Gabriel Moreno sidelined with thumb injury

In a tough blow to the Arizona Diamondbacks, catcher Gabriel Moreno has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left thumb. The team has called up Jose Herrera from Triple-A Reno to fill Moreno’s spot on the roster.

The 24-year-old Moreno left Friday night’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth inning after sustaining the injury. He had hit his third home run of the season earlier in the game, a blast off Taijuan Walker.

According to Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, initial X-rays on Moreno’s thumb were negative. However, after taking a foul ball off his hand and feeling some discomfort, the team decided to take a closer look at the injury.

“He caught the ball a little funny, so we wanted to get it looked at,” Lovullo explained.

Moreno, who won a Gold Glove award last season, has been a solid contributor for the Diamondbacks this year, hitting .230 with a .659 OPS in 61 games. Losing his services will definitely be a blow to the team’s lineup.

Kosport Magazine’s Take

It’s always tough to see a key player like Gabriel Moreno go down with an injury, and the Arizona Diamondbacks will surely feel his absence. Moreno’s solid defense behind the plate and contributions with his bat will be missed, but his team will have to rally and continue their season without him. We wish Moreno a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the field soon.
