The San Francisco Giants have announced that outfielder Mike Yastrzemski will be placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left oblique strain.

The injury occurred during Thursday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals and Yastrzemski was seen leaving the field with a trainer.

Outfielder Michael Conforto has also been struggling, so the Giants have recalled Luis Matos from Triple-A Sacramento to fill in for Yastrzemski.

In his time with the River Cats, Matos has been performing well with a .321 batting average, five home runs, and a 1.075 OPS in just 13 games. The 22-year-old has previously played in 97 games with the Giants over the past two seasons, hitting .243 with four home runs and 34 RBIs.

Yastrzemski, who has been in the majors for six seasons, holds a career average of .239 with 95 home runs and 289 RBIs in 621 games with the Giants. This season, he has a batting average of .224 through 67 games.

In addition to the roster moves, the Giants have also placed right-handed pitcher Keaton Winn on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation. Winn had a rough outing in Thursday’s game at the historic Rickwood Field, giving up five runs in 2⅔ innings. The 22-year-old has a 7.16 ERA in 12 starts this season.

Additionally, the Giants have also called up third baseman David Villar from Sacramento while infielder/outfielder Tyler Fitzgerald has been sent back down.

Villar, who is 27 years old, has previously played in 98 games with the Giants over the past two seasons. He has recorded 14 home runs, 36 RBIs, and a .193 batting average. Meanwhile, Fitzgerald has hit .273 with one home run and four RBIs in his 28 games with the Giants this season.

Kosport Magazine’s Take: With Yastrzemski’s injury and Conforto’s struggles, the Giants are relying on young call-up Luis Matos to fill in the gaps in the outfield. Matos has shown promise in his time with Triple-A Sacramento and will have the opportunity to prove himself in the majors. The team is also dealing with injuries to pitcher Keaton Winn and has made some corresponding roster moves to fill those holes. the Giants will need to work through these challenges to stay competitive in their division.
