Cubs designate catcher Yan Gomes for assignment, sign Tomas Nido
The Chicago Cubs announced on Wednesday that they have designated veteran catcher Yan Gomes for assignment and signed Tomas Nido to take his place on the roster. This move comes as a surprise to many, as Gomes has been with the Cubs for three seasons and was a key member of the team’s clubhouse. However, with his current offensive struggles, the Cubs have made the decision to try and improve their production behind the plate.
Gomes, a 13-year veteran, has been playing on a $6 million option and has struggled to find success at the plate this season, hitting a career-low .154 with only 2 home runs and 7 RBIs. Cubs manager Craig Counsell acknowledged that it was a tough decision to make, but the team felt that they needed to make a change in order to improve their catching position.
Replacing Gomes on the roster is Tomas Nido, who was recently released from the New York Mets and had been struggling offensively as well. Nido was hitting .125 with no extra-base hits when he was released, but he is excited for the opportunity to join the Cubs and contribute to their success. He has experience playing on winning teams and is determined to do whatever it takes to help the Cubs get back on track.
One of the reasons Nido is excited to join the Cubs is because he has always enjoyed playing at Wrigley Field, even as an opposing player. He is looking forward to being on the home side and using his knowledge and skills to help the team win. Nido will join catcher Miguel Amaya, who has been getting the majority of the starts for the Cubs and will continue to do so for the time being.
Gomes, who has 137 career home runs, has played for the Oakland Athletics, Washington Nationals, Cleveland Guardians, and Toronto Blue Jays before joining the Cubs in 2022. He was also a key member of the Nationals’ 2019 World Series championship team. Gomes’ release comes as a disappointment, but the Cubs are confident that Nido will bring a much-needed boost to their catching position.
Kosport Magazine’s Take
While it may be tough to see a player like Yan Gomes designated for assignment, the Cubs are making a necessary move in order to improve their team. Nido may not have had the best offensive numbers with the Mets, but he brings experience and a winning mindset to the Cubs. It will be interesting to see how Nido performs and if he can help the Cubs get back on track. Let’s hope this change behind the plate leads to positive results for the Chicago Cubs.
