Tigers Honor Leyland: No. 10 Jersey Retired Aug. 3!

Kosport Magazine Honors Jim Leyland’s Legacy

Kosport Magazine is proud to announce that the Detroit Tigers will be retiring Jim Leyland’s No. 10 during a ceremony on August 3rd. This honor comes just in time for Leyland’s induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame next month, solidifying his place among the elite managers in the game.

Leyland, now 79 years old, spent 22 seasons as a manager and amassed an impressive 1,769 regular-season wins. His greatest successes came with the Tigers, where he led the team to a 700-597 record from 2006-2013. Under his leadership, the Tigers made two trips to the World Series in 2006 and 2012.

But this is just the latest accomplishment in a long and storied career for Leyland. He also managed the Pittsburgh Pirates, Florida Marlins, and Colorado Rockies, with his crowning achievement being the 1997 World Series title with the Marlins.

Leyland’s tenure with the Tigers was marked by his ability to connect with players and get the best out of them. This, combined with his strategic brilliance, cemented his status as one of the greatest managers in the team’s history. He ranks third in wins among Detroit managers, behind only Sparky Anderson and Hughie Jennings.

The retirement of No. 10 puts Leyland’s name alongside other Tigers legends who have had their numbers retired by the team, including Lou Whitaker, Charle Gehringer, and Alan Trammell. Leyland’s impact on the Tigers organization and the game of baseball as a whole cannot be understated.

As we honor Leyland and his contributions to the Tigers, let us also remember the impact he made on the sport as a whole. From his humble beginnings as a minor league player to his rightful place in the Hall of Fame, Leyland’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players and managers.

Kosport Magazine’s Take

At Kosport Magazine, we are thrilled to see Jim Leyland’s legacy being honored by the Detroit Tigers. Leyland’s passion, dedication, and strategic genius made him a beloved figure in baseball, and this retirement is a well-deserved recognition of his impact on the sport. We congratulate Leyland on his upcoming induction into the Hall of Fame and look forward to seeing his No. 10 displayed in perpetuity at Comerica Park.
