Marlins’ C Bethancourt Takes a Break: Placed on Bereavement List

Miami Marlins Place Christian Bethancourt on Bereavement List

On June 1, 2024, the Miami Marlins made the decision to place Christian Bethancourt on the bereavement list. In his place, fellow catcher Jhonny Pereda was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville.

Bethancourt, currently 32 years old, has had a tough season batting .162 with only one home run and five RBIs in 31 games. Throughout his eight major league seasons, he has played for five different clubs, maintaining a .227 batting average with 31 home runs and 118 RBIs in 396 career games.

Jhonny Pereda Joins the Marlins

Joining the Miami Marlins in place of Bethancourt is 28-year-old Jhonny Pereda. Originally a member of the Chicago Cubs organization in 2013, Pereda made his major league debut with the Marlins on April 17. Despite not having a hit in his five at-bats over three games with the Marlins, Pereda has shown potential and will be given the opportunity to prove himself.

Having spent eleven years in the minor leagues, Pereda’s hard work and dedication have finally paid off with his major league debut and call up earlier this season. He adds a fresh and young energy to the team, providing depth and support behind the plate.

Kosport Magazine’s Take:

The Miami Marlins have made a tough decision by placing Bethancourt on the bereavement list, but their choice to bring up Pereda shows their confidence in his abilities and potential. With his major league debut and call up, Pereda has the chance to prove himself and make a lasting impact on the team. The Marlins are in good hands with these two talented catchers leading their team.
