As a result, Gallen is likely headed to the injured list, making a big impact on the Diamondbacks’ chances of taking the win.
Gallen, who has been among the top five in NL Cy Young Award voting for the past two seasons, was scheduled to return to Phoenix for a scan on Friday to determine the severity of his injury. The 28-year-old right-hander felt the strain on his knuckle-curve that Francisco Lindor lined to center for a leadoff single, forcing Manager Torey Lovullo to call for the trainer.
“Hamstring grabbed on me, so I threw another pitch to see if it was severe and sense if I could keep pitching or not, if it was more like a cramp,” Gallen said. ”Just knew that I couldn’t really keep going or if I did I would put the team in jeopardy of not giving them a chance to win.”
Lovullo was forced to use his bullpen to get 24 outs from Bryce Jarvis, Brandon Hughes, Justin Martinez, Joe Mantiply, Ryan Thompson, and Kevin Ginkel.
Lovullo expressed that he would wait for the results of the scan before making any roster moves, but the Diamondbacks will most likely be without Gallen for some time. The team is already missing right-hander Merrill Kelly and left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, putting a strain on their starting rotation.
