The New York Yankees have announced that infielder Jon Berti has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left calf strain. The injury occurred during Friday night’s game against the San Diego Padres and Berti is expected to be sidelined for at least 10 days.

The 34-year-old Berti has been a valuable player for the Yankees this season, batting .273 with one home run and six RBIs in 17 games. He has also been a key contributor since returning from a left groin strain earlier this month, hitting .306 with a .359 on-base percentage and .389 slugging percentage.

“Berti brings a lot to our team with his speed and defense,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “He’s been great for us and we hope he can return to action soon. He’s an important part of our bench moving forward.”

In a corresponding move, the Yankees have selected the contract of infielder Kevin Smith from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 27-year-old has played in one game for the team this season and is hitting .204 in 29 games at Triple-A.

To make room on the roster, the Yankees have moved second baseman DJ LeMahieu to the 60-day injured list due to a right foot contusion. LeMahieu is expected to return when the team faces the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday.

Kosport Magazine’s Take

The New York Yankees will have to make do without the services of Jon Berti for the next 10 days as he recovers from a left calf strain. Berti has been a valuable asset to the team this season and his absence will be felt. In the meantime, the Yankees have called up Kevin Smith to help fill the void. We wish Berti a speedy recovery and look forward to his return to the field as soon as possible.
