Teofimo Lopez Recognizes the Challenge of Steve Claggett
Saturday night will see WBO light welterweight champion, Teofimo Lopez, take on Steve Claggett in a highly anticipated twelve-round main event bout at the James L. Knight Center in Miami, Florida. And while many are expecting an easy victory for Lopez, the champion insists that Claggett will not be a walk in the park.
“I don’t overlook him,” Lopez said to Sean Zittel’s YouTube channel. “He’s going to bring the best out of me in this fight.”
Kosport Magazine’s Take
Lopez’s recognition of Claggett’s challenge shows his focus and determination to not underestimate his opponent. It’s important for Lopez to keep this mindset in order to maintain his reputation as a top fighter.
The Search for Big Fights
However, Lopez’s popularity has suffered in recent years due to his loss to George Kambosos Jr. and controversial wins over Sandor Martin and Jamaine Ortiz. Fans have been eager to see him face tough opponents but have been left disappointed. In fact, Lopez’s popularity has been hindered by his tendency to choose only “gimme” fights.
“Those money fights have been elusive for Teofimo,” writes Kosport Magazine. “His popularity, or lack thereof, is the direct cause of his tendency to take only gimmes, and he’s shockingly too obtuse to understand that.”
