Meet the Next Big Name in Boxing Training
John Ryder has been identified as the future leader of the Matchroom Elite Boxing Gym, taking over from the highly respected trainer Tony Sims. Since his retirement earlier this year, Ryder, 35, has been working alongside Sims at the gym in Essex. He recently obtained his license to be a trainer in the corner during fights.
With a successful career as a trainer under his belt, Sims recognizes that he is nearing the end and is now focusing on building a legacy for the future. He has trained world champions such as Darren Barker, Anthony Joshua, and Joe Cordina, and helped elevate the performances of many other talented boxers including Ryder and Kevin Mitchell.
Mitchell, who was previously an assistant trainer, has decided to pursue his dream of becoming a lead trainer. Similarly, Sims is looking towards the future and planning for the long term. His strong relationship with Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn has led to his son, Charlie, taking on the project of running the Churchill Boxing Club in Los Angeles on behalf of the promoter. There are also plans for Ryder to eventually take over Sims’ gym near Matchroom’s headquarters in Brentwood.
“John’s come along and retired,” said Sims. “I’m working on my own in the gym, and I asked him to become my assistant. Eventually, we all retire, don’t we? I’ve trained fighters for 27 years now. I’m not thinking of retiring yet, but in 10 years’ time, I won’t be training fighters anymore. I hope John can stay with me instead of moving on and eventually take over the gym.”
Sims has had several assistants over the years, and he understands that they eventually want to train their own fighters. He respects their decision and supports them, just as he was supported when he wanted to move on to become a lead trainer. Some people are content being assistant trainers, while others, like Sims, have the ambition to take on the role of the head trainer.
Not many retired fighters have had the same level of success as trainers. Ryder hung up his gloves after competing at the highest level against the legendary Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in 2023. Sims believes that patience is the key to being a good trainer, and Ryder has it in abundance.
“I heard Roy Jones Jr on a radio show, and he was asked what makes a great fighter a great trainer, because not all great fighters make great trainers,” said Sims. “Roy Jones had a great answer: ‘Patience with fighters.’ I think that’s the main attribute of a good trainer.”
Every fighter is different, and Sims understands that. Each one has a unique style, personality, and needs. Some require more coaching in certain areas, while others may have natural talent but lack confidence or discipline outside of the gym. Sims believes that being a trainer is not just about coaching, but also about nurturing and guiding the fighter.
“You have to have patience with each individual fighter,” Sims said. “It’s not about trying to make them into something they’re not right away. Some take longer to develop, and you have to be patient. But when a fighter believes in you and the information you’re giving them, that’s where the magic happens.”
Ryder has all the qualities of a great trainer. He understands the fighter’s mindset and can connect with them, earning their trust and respect. Sims has no doubt that he will become a top trainer in the near future.
