Manny Pacquiao to Return to the Ring for WBC Welterweight Title Bout
Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao is set to make his long-awaited return to the ring, and he has his sights set on the WBC welterweight title.
Kosport Magazine can confirm that Pacquiao is in serious negotiations to take on Mario Barrios for the title, with a likely date set for September in either the MGM Grand or T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Barrios, a former WBA champion at 140 pounds, claimed the interim WBC title in May and is expected to be elevated to full champion status after undefeated Terence Crawford moves up to 154 pounds.
Despite his struggles against high-profile opponents like Gervonta Davis and Keith Thurman, Barrios has shown his strength and skill in dominant wins, including a knockdown-laden victory over Cuba’s Yordenis Ugas.
Meanwhile, Pacquiao is eager to prove himself against a real challenge after his close decision loss to Ugas in August 2021. The Filipino boxer was previously tempted by a fight with welterweight contender Conor Benn, but with Benn currently facing a ban for doping, the Pacquiao-Barrios matchup looks to be a more promising choice.
Pacquiao’s advisor Sean Gibbons is set to meet with the boxer in his hometown of the Philippines to finalize the deal, with both sides showing strong interest in making this fight happen.
