Homecoming & Legacy: Lamont Roach Jr.’s Emotional Journey to Honor His Late Cousin

Lamont Roach Jr. Excited for Championship Homecoming in Washington

Lamont Roach Jr. is gearing up for his highly anticipated championship homecoming as he defends his WBA super featherweight title in Washington on June 28th. Roach is thrilled to be fighting in his hometown once again and is ready to put on a spectacular performance for his fans.

Roach, who earned his title from Hector Luis Garcia in November on the David Benavidez-Demetrius Andrade card in Las Vegas, will be facing off against Irishman Feargal McCrory at the Entertainment and Sports Arena. Both fighters have impressive records, with Roach holding a 24-1-1 record with 9 knockouts, and McCrory boasting a 16-0 record with 8 knockouts.

“This homecoming means everything to me,” said Roach. “The last time I fought at home was in 2017 at the MGM National Harbor, and I promised my fans, family, and friends that I would bring a world title back home. And now, I am fulfilling that promise by defending my title in front of my hometown crowd.”

Promoted by Garry Jonas and Roach Sr.’s NoXcuse Promotions, the fight will be broadcasted by ProBox TV. Roach is leaving no stone unturned in his preparation for this fight and is ready for anything, including his opponent’s southpaw stance.

“I’ve had a lot of success against southpaws in my career,” Roach stated. “Even early on, I fought a guy with only four fights when I had nine, and he was a southpaw. I beat him, and then he went on to fight Vergil Ortiz in his next bout. So, I am not afraid to face anyone in the ring.”

Roach’s father is now his trainer, and the two share a unique dynamic, both personally and professionally. Roach is grateful to have his father by his side, guiding him to greatness.

“I am blessed to have my dad as my trainer and manager. He knows how to separate being my father and being my coach, and he has been doing an outstanding job,” Roach said in an interview with ProBox TV.

Roach’s cousin, Bernard “Boogaloo” Roach, was his original trainer and the reason why the Roach family is passionate about boxing. Sadly, Boogaloo passed away from a heart attack just days before Roach’s fight with Luis Hinojosa. Roach is carrying on his cousin’s legacy and fighting to honor him.

“It was a devastating blow for our family,” Roach confessed. “But we are all finishing a legacy that he helped start, and that motivates me to keep pushing forward.”

Roach knew he would outgrow the MGM National Harbor, and now he is returning home for a much-anticipated fight. He looks forward to the support and love from his fans, who have been with him throughout his journey.

“They’ve been with me through it all,” Roach said of his fans. “Even when they couldn’t make it to my fights, I knew they were there supporting me in spirit. I am excited to feel the love from the crowd, and I am ready to put on a show for them. I know that 99% of the people in the arena will be there to support me and my city, and that’s what motivates me to give my all in the ring.”

Kosport Magazine’s Take: Roach’s homecoming is sure to be an unforgettable event, with the champion looking to defend his title in front of his hometown fans. With his father by his side and the memory of his cousin, Roach has a powerful support system behind him, and we can expect an electrifying performance in Washington. Don’t miss this epic showdown between two talented fighters on June 28th.
