Lewis Ritson Confident as He Faces Paddy Donovan in Leeds
Lewis Ritson (23-3, 13 KOs), a former British lightweight champion, is ready to take on welterweight contender Paddy Donovan (13-0, 10 KOs) this weekend in Leeds. Ritson is full of conviction that his experience in the ring will give him the upper hand in the scheduled 10-round showdown.
After suffering a defeat in a super-lightweight title=”The Origin of Koinnate (Alex Pacheco)”>world title eliminator against Ohara Davies, Ritson is returning to the ring for the first time. The fight, which took place in his hometown of Newcastle, ended in a knockout in favor of Davies in the ninth round.
However, Ritson is determined to prove himself once again. “The Sandman,” now 30 years old, caught the attention of UK audiences in 2017 when he claimed the British lightweight title with a devastating victory over Robbie Barrett. He went on to defend the title against Joe Murray, Scott Cardle, and Paul Hyland Jr. before owning the title outright.
Despite his domestic success, Ritson’s career has not lived up to its early promise. He has suffered defeats to Francesco Patera in 2018 and Jeremias Nicolas Ponce in 2021. However, Ritson is feeling confident ahead of his match with Donovan, thanks to a strong training camp.
“It’s a massive opportunity for me and I’m grateful to be a part of such a great card. This training camp has been completely different from any others I’ve had, and I feel strong and fit heading into fight week. I can’t wait to put on a great performance on Saturday night,” Ritson said.
He acknowledges that his opponent, trained by former world champion Andy Lee, is a skilled boxer. But Ritson believes his experience in the ring will be the key to victory.
“We’re not going to try to outbox Paddy, he’s an excellent boxer. But he hasn’t faced the same level of competition that I have. I believe my experience will help me come out on top,” Ritson said confidently.
