“That was a visual representation of what can happen if you do skip levels,” Riley explains. “I’ve always had this mentality, regardless of their outcomes at world level. But that was just solid proof that you need to run the tests before you go up there.”
Riley’s journey to the top has not been an easy one. Six months ago, he won the English title and took the unbeaten record of Liverpool’s Nathan Quarless. A skilled amateur, Riley outboxed Quarless and went the distance, proving his endurance and determination.
On Sunday, Riley will face a more familiar version of Lawal, who lost his British title to Commonwealth belt holder Isaac Chamberlain last October. Riley has been calling for a fight with Chamberlain and is determined to further his case by doing an even more impressive job against Lawal.
“I’ve got more power. I’m smarter and I’ve got better technique,” says Riley confidently. ”I give myself the upside in terms of the fashion I win compared to Isaac.”
Riley is prepared for an aggressive and desperate Lawal, but he believes that his own versatility will be the deciding factor in the fight and throughout his career.
“If he wants to make my life easier, he can be as reckless as he wants,” says Riley. ”Now that he’s hungry, he’s determined, and he’s going to be focused. He does have a point to prove, and I’m sure he’s going to do everything in his effort to prove that point. If you try hard, you die hard.”
