Carlos Cuadras (Achilles) Out, Andrew Moloney Seeks New Opponent For May 12 In Australia

Andrew Moloney Seeks New Opponent

Andrew Moloney is on the lookout for a new challenger after Mexico City’s Carlos Cuadras had to withdraw from their scheduled bout due to a torn Achilles that required surgery. The recovery process will prevent Cuadras from facing Moloney in their planned May 12 interim WBC 115-pound title fight in Perth, Australia.

Despite Cuadras’ absence, Moloney will still be featured on the card, likely in the ESPN co-feature alongside the Vasiliy Lomachenko-George Kambosos vacant IBF lightweight title fight. The leading candidate to replace Cuadras is Pedro Guevara, who previously lost to Cuadras in their interim WBC title fight last November.

Moloney, ranked No. 4 at 115, was willing to challenge for the secondary WBC title, even though he is the top-rated WBO contender in the division. The Australian fighter will have the opportunity to compete in his home country for the second consecutive time, following a ten-round victory over Judy Flores in his last outing.

Despite a setback in his previous fight against Junto Nakatani, Moloney has worked his way back to contention after Nakatani vacated the WBO 115-pound title to move up to bantamweight.

Exciting Card Ahead

The rest of the fight card remains intact, with WBA bantamweight champion Nina Hughes defending her title against Cherneka Johnson in the ESPN-televised opener. The event will also be broadcast live on Main Event Pay-Per-View in Australia.

In the main event, Ukraine’s Lomachenko and Sydney’s Kambosos will battle for the vacant lightweight title, showcasing a clash between former RING champions. Lomachenko, ranked No. 1 at 135, will face the No. 9-rated lightweight in Kambosos.
