Lightweight contender Abdullah Mason (13-0, 11 KOs) put in arguably the best performance on Top Rank’s card on Saturday night, crushing Ronal Ron (14-6, 11 KOs) by fourth-round knockout at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Although Mason, 20, was left off the main portion of the card by his promoters at Top Rank, he still upstaged the headliner between Jared Anderson and Ryad Merhy, by destroying Ronal Ron in an impressive two-knockdown performance. It’s a pity that Mason wasn’t one of the three fights on the main card.
Mason dropped Ron with a straight left-right down the pipe in round one. In the fourth, Mason put Ron down for the second time in the fight by nailing him with a powerful body shot. He then finished him off with a flurry of hard shots. The referee stepped in and halted the fight at 1:02 of round four.
Boxing fans on social media believe the referee stopped the fight a little early. Ron was still upright and trying his best at the time, but the referee had apparently seen enough.
Despite getting stopped, Ron showed good punch resistance to make it out of the first three rounds without getting knocked out, as he took some massive shots from Mason that would have stopped a lot of fighters. In the fourth round, Mason hit Ron with a perfectly placed left to the body that caused him to go down in a delayed reaction.
When Ron got to his feet, he chose to slug with Mason rather than hold on to recover from the shot. That proved to be a mistake becaue he immediately tore into him with hard punches, and Ron was helpless to block any of them.
With that performance, Mason looks ready to fight for a world title soon. If he moves up to 140, he can speed up his chances for a crack at a title.
