Coming up just around the corner on April 20th from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, in a bout that will be broadcast on DAZN PPV, WBC junior welterweight champion Devin Haney will square off against challenger Ryan Garcia.
Both boxers had two fights last year. Back in April Garcia lost for the first time in his professional career when he was outclassed and ultimately knocked out in round 8 by Tank Davis. Garcia rebounded from that loss when he stopped Oscar Duarte in round 8 last December.
As for Haney, last May he successfully defended his undisputed world lightweight championship when he won a 12 round unanimous decision against Vasyl Lomachneko. The verdict in that one was somewhat controversial where a lot of observers believed that Lomachenko deserved to win, and with the victory Haney had successfully defended his undisputed crown for the second time. Then in December of last year, Haney moved up to 140 and he thoroughly outclassed Regis Prograis to win the WBC junior welterweight title. Going into that one, some people viewed Prograis as the top guy at 140, and Haney pitched a literal shutout, winning every round in a lopsided unanimous decision where all three judges scored it 120-107.
This is a high profile event that provides an opportunity to both boxers. Haney gets the opportunity to shine under the big spotlight to further solidify his standing as one of the elite pound for pound boxers competing in the sport today, and Garcia has the opportunity to win his first championship.
