Canelo Alvarez once again reiterated that he wants “nothing to do” with a fight against David Benavidez. The way Canelo said it, he’s not changing his mind, and that’s the end of the story.

Canelo has spoken, and Benavidez needs to understand this. That fight ain’t happening for him in this lifetime, and he’s just making himself look silly by continuing to bang the drum for it. Benavidez needs to accept that reality and stop being slow to understand.

Self-Sabotage: Benavidez Squandered His Chance

Whatever chance he had has long since evaporated. He spoiled it with the pressure tactics he used to try to force Canelo to fight him, which backfired spectacularly.

Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) said in an interview that he wants nothing to do with Benavidez or Oscar De La Hoya.

Benavidez has burned his last bridges for a fight against superstar Canelo, and it’s too late to fix the damage done by his mouthing off and disrespectfully pressuring him for a fight.

Canelo Rejects Benavidez’s Concessions

“And then what? You’re going to talk about that clause. When I beat him, they’re going to say that I put that clause,” said Canelo Alvarez to Fight Hub TV, reacting to being told that David Benavidez said he would accept a rehydration clause if he’s worried about him ballooning up in weight 25 lbs after he weighs-in for a fight against him.

Even if Canelo did agree to Benavidez volunteering for a rehydration clause, what good would it be? Rehydration clauses are useless in this era of boxing, where fighters can rapidly rehydrate within an hour using special tricks.

Canelo’s Prerogative

“I want nothing to do with that fight. Yeah, it’s a lose-lose situation because after the fight, they [Team Benavidez] are going to talk about, ‘Because of this.’ I fight with any fighter and I win my good money,” said Canelo when told that he can’t make big money fighting anybody else at 168 other than Benavidez.

“I can do whatever I want at this time because I deserve it. I did everything in my career, and I deserve to be in this position. I’m going to do whatever I want,” said Canelo.
