Newly crowned WBC featherweight champion Skye Nicolson calls out Amanda Serrano for unified world title fight

After a dominant performance against Sarah Mahfoud, Skye Nicolson has set her sights on the next challenge – a unification bout against Amanda Serrano for the world featherweight titles.

Nicolson, with a record of 10-0 and 1 KO, claimed the WBC featherweight title with a comfortable points decision win over Mahfoud at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas. With scorecards of 100-90, 100-90, and 99-91, Nicolson’s victory was a clear one and marked the first major title of her career.

Speaking to Kosport Magazine, Nicolson agreed with the scoring judge that her performance was a “complete shutout.”

“I would have called it a complete shutout, but I will watch it back and find out which round one of the three judges thought I lost,” Nicolson said. “I am not going to dwell on that too long. I am a bit of a perfectionist, but I thought it was a pretty punch-perfect performance for me. I didn’t really get into second gear, and I felt I made the fight very easy for myself. However, if I am honest, I did feel a little bit lazy if you compared what I have been doing in the gym.”

Nicolson’s timing and distance control were key factors in her victory over Mahfoud, with the Australian’s ability to offset her opponent’s attacks causing frustration for Mahfoud.

“I think my timing and distance. Distance control and offsetting my opponent are probably my biggest strengths, and I think she [Mahfoud] really struggled with that,” Nicolson explained. “I saw everything that she was throwing, and I found it quite easy to make her miss, but she was also quite awkward and hard to hit. She was good at breaking up my attacks and played a reason why I didn’t come forward as much as I should have, but I will make sure I won’t make those mistakes again next time.”

Nicolson sets her sights on unifying the featherweight division and facing Amanda Serrano

The WBC title that Nicolson claimed was previously held by Amanda Serrano, who relinquished it due to the WBC’s unwillingness to sanction her title defense against Danila Ramos. Serrano wanted the fight and future bouts to be fought over the 12×3 championship distance, but the WBC denied her request and she immediately gave up the belt.

Nicolson wasted no time in calling out Serrano, stating her intention to capture the remaining featherweight titles and face the multi-weight world champion.

“It’s nothing personal. If you don’t want to fight me, can we talk about what we are doing with the belts? I want the belts. I don’t have to fight you if you don’t want me to, but if you want to fight, I’ll be ready when you are,” Nicolson challenged Serrano.

Summary:

Newly crowned WBC featherweight champion Skye Nicolson has called out Amanda Serrano for a unification bout to determine the undisputed world featherweight champion. Nicolson’s dominant performance against Sarah Mahfoud earned her the WBC title, previously held by Serrano. Nicolson’s timing and distance control were key factors in her victory, and she now sets her sights on capturing the remaining featherweight titles and facing Serrano in the ring.
