Kosport Magazine: Eddie Hearn Pushes for Unification Fight Between Pitbull Cruz and Subriel Matias
Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn is determined to make a unification fight happen between IBF light welterweight champion Subriel Matias and WBA champ Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz this year. In an exclusive interview with Kosport Magazine, Hearn revealed his plans for this highly anticipated matchup.
Hearn acknowledges that there are several obstacles that must be overcome for the Cruz-Matias fight to become a reality. Matias (20-1-1, 15 KOs) must first defend his title against Liam Paro on June 15th, and a cross-promotion, joint-network deal with Premier Boxing Champions, Amazon, and DAZN must be put together.
However, Hearn is confident that these hurdles can be overcome, and he believes that a unification fight between Cruz and Matias would be a huge success. “If Subriel Matias beats Liam Paro, which is a really good fight, I think we should make Pitbull vs. Matias in a unification fight,” said Hearn.
The potential for a co-promotion between Matchroom and PBC adds another layer of excitement to this matchup. Hearn hopes to collaborate with Al Haymon’s company to make the fight happen, with the possibility of it being shown on Amazon Prime and DAZN on PPV.
The clash between Mexico’s Cruz and Puerto Rico’s Matias would also add to the intrigue of this fight, as it would be a battle between two fighters from different nationalities. Hearn believes that this would generate a tremendous amount of interest from fans.
When it comes to the financial aspect of the fight, Hearn has a unique proposal. “With Matias and Pitbull, I would let the fighters split the money for the fight,” he said. This would be a refreshing change from the usual negotiations between promoters and fighters.
However, Hearn acknowledges that PBC boss Al Haymon will need to agree to collaborate for the Cruz vs. Matias fight to work. Some believe that Haymon may want to do a rematch between Cruz and Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, which could potentially hinder the chances of this unification fight.
But Hearn remains optimistic and believes that this fight would be great for boxing. “That is a hell of a fight. It’s an easy fight to make,” he said. “I wonder if Haymon will go for it. It would be great for boxing.”
