Kosport Magazine: Cruiserweight Muhsin Cason Envisions Future Fight with Tommy Fury
Professional boxer and influencer Muhsin Cason has his sights set on a potential match-up with Tommy Fury, but not in the immediate future. Cason, who is the younger brother of former heavyweight world champion Hasim Rahman, will be facing veteran DeShon Webster in a six-round fight on April 27th at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia.
At 30 years old, Cason has already made a name for himself in the boxing world, not living in the shadow of his older brother but carving out his own path. In fact, he has already fought on an influencer card last November, where he stopped Piotr Budziszewski in the second round.
But Cason’s ultimate goal is to become a world champion, and his upcoming fight against Webster is one step closer to achieving that. While Webster has been stopped in his last three fights, he did fight Samuel Clarkson to a draw in 2020, making him a tough opponent for Cason.
“I think this fight is another step-up, another tough opponent, where I can gradually get to the world stage, where I can say I can be ranked [for a world title],” Cason explained. “I am getting prepared to be in the [top fifteen] of the world rankings within the next year.”
But Cason is also open to the idea of influencer boxing, recognizing the potential for financial gain in that realm. However, he also wants to prove himself as a legitimate boxer and earn his way to a world title shot.
Given his family history and pedigree, Cason sees a potential future fight with Tommy Fury, the brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. But he wants to earn that fight rather than simply call for it.
“I just think he has a lot of money, he talks this talk like he is a real boxer, but he has only faced [limited competition],” Cason said of Fury. “He has never faced a real boxer like that, and I think if he got in there with me, Viddal Riley, someone like that he’d get [hurt].”
Cason also expressed frustration with Fury’s lack of challenging himself against legitimate opponents, instead relying on his brother’s platform and popularity to secure big fights.
While Cason acknowledges that Jake Paul, who fought Fury, is a good boxer for his level, he questions Fury’s determination to become a world champion without facing fighters of a similar pedigree.
But Cason also recognizes the potential for a fight with Fury to be a big money fight, given the fact that both of their brothers are heavyweight world champions and they are both striving for a world title themselves.
“I think it would be good for television, it would be good for social and it would be good for boxing,” Cason said of a potential fight with Fury. “Both of our brothers are [heavyweight] world champions. We are both per se trying to get to a world championship. I think it would be a legacy fight.”
As a savvy businessman, Cason understands the importance of being both a skilled boxer and a charismatic personality in order to maximize his earning potential. He sees himself walking a fine line between the two, and is willing to take advantage of opportunities in both the professional and influencer boxing worlds.
