The Road to Redemption: Andy Ruiz Urged to Return to the Heavyweight Mix in Saudi Arabia
It was a moment that shook the world of boxing. On June 1, 2019, Andy Ruiz Jr. shocked the world by defeating Anthony Joshua in a stunning upset at Madison Square Garden. The Mexican heavyweight became the unified world champion, holding three of the four major belts in the division.
But as quickly as Ruiz rose to the top, he fell just as fast. In a rematch with Joshua in December of that same year, Ruiz lost his titles in a one-sided points defeat. And since then, his career has been plagued by inactivity and personal issues.
But now, his former trainer Manny Robles is urging him to return to the ring and fight his way back into the mix in the lucrative world of heavyweight boxing in Saudi Arabia.
Robles, who was the mastermind behind Ruiz’s historic victory over Joshua, believes that the Mexican fighter still has what it takes to compete at the highest level. In an interview with Kosport Magazine, he stated, “A loss should not determine a fighter’s career; I don’t think he should be judged by that defeat.”
Robles also addressed the ongoing issues that have kept Ruiz out of the ring, including celebrating for too long after his victory over Joshua and personal struggles with mental health and separation from his wife. But he believes that Ruiz can overcome these obstacles and make a comeback.
Since his defeat to Joshua, Ruiz has only fought twice, with wins against Chris Arreola and Luis Ortiz. But he has yet to secure a major fight that could put him back in the spotlight. The WBC ordered a final eliminator between Ruiz and Deontay Wilder, but the two could not come to an agreement.
Despite parting ways with Robles after the rematch with Joshua, Ruiz’s former trainer still believes in his potential. “He should come back and take advantage of this opportunity that has been given to all the heavyweight fighters,” Robles stated.
Will Ruiz Rise Again?
As Ruiz continues to navigate his way through personal and professional challenges, the question remains: will he return to the ring and reclaim his spot among the top heavyweights?
With the world of boxing buzzing with potential matchups and big-money fights, there is no better time for Ruiz to make his comeback. And with the support and encouragement of his former trainer, he may just have the motivation he needs to get back in the mix.
Only time will tell if Ruiz will rise again and prove himself as a true champion in the heavyweight division. But one thing is for sure, the road to redemption is never easy, but it is always worth fighting for.
