Kosport Magazine: Algieri Believes Tszyu’s Corner Should Have Stopped Fight Against Fundora

Former world super lightweight champion Chris Algieri has weighed in on the recent fight between Tim Tszyu and Sebastian Fundora, stating that Tszyu’s corner should have stopped the fight due to a severe cut caused by an accidental elbow from Fundora.

Tszyu, who was defending his WBO super welterweight title, fought through a bloody mask for 10 rounds after the incident in the second round. While Tszyu showed no signs of quitting, Algieri believes it was ultimately the decision of his corner to withdraw him from the fight.

“Tszyu showed he was a warrior, fighting through the cut, but was that the right move?” Algieri told Kosport Magazine. “In my eyes, no. I think his team should have stepped in and gotten the fight stopped.”

Algieri also pointed out that Tszyu’s corner could have stopped the fight after four rounds, potentially resulting in a draw and allowing Tszyu to retain his title. Instead, Tszyu lost his title on a split decision to Fundora, who also claimed the vacant WBC belt.

After the fight, Fundora was challenged by Errol Spence, and the new champion expressed interest in fighting Spence or Terence Crawford. However, if Fundora chooses to fight Spence, the WBO will likely strip him of his title, potentially setting up a fight between Crawford and Tszyu for the vacant title.

“I think Spence and Fundora is going to be a fun fight,” Algieri said. “It just depends how much Errol has left.”
