Lerrone Richards Returns to Super Middleweight Division
After a couple of years of inactivity, Lerrone Richards is ready to make his return to the super middleweight division. The former British, Commonwealth, European, and IBO titleholder has been out of sight and out of mind for the top super middleweights, but he is determined to make a statement and reclaim his spot among the elite.
Richards (18-0, 4 KOs) will face Steed Woodall (18-2-1, 11 KOs) on April 12 at York Hall, with the fight being broadcasted live on Channel 5. This will be Richards’ first fight at 168 pounds since his decision victory over Carlos Gongora in 2021.
While Saul “Canelo” Alvarez continues to dominate the super middleweight scene, Richards believes he is already the class of the division. With a group of exciting fighters like Edgar Berlanga, Christian Mbilli, Diego Pacheco, and David Morrell all entering their peak years, the division is on the verge of a golden period.
But Richards has his sights set on one particular opponent – Edgar Berlanga. “I like the Berlanga fight,” Richards said. “I think it makes a lot of sense. Pacheco is a little bit behind now, but that’s a lovely fight in the future. Berlanga, though, I think me and him is a lovely fight to make.”
However, Richards knows that a victory over Woodall and a ranking belt won’t automatically earn him a big fight. He will have to push for it and make a name for himself in the division once again.
Richards’ Road to Redemption
At 31 years old, Richards is determined to prove that he is still a force to be reckoned with in the super middleweight division. After a frustrating period of inactivity, he returned to the ring last year with a couple of routine victories at light heavyweight.
But now, he is ready to reclaim his spot among the top 15 rankings of all major governing bodies. With a victory over Woodall, Richards will collect a WBO Inter-Continental title and use his clever networking and politicking skills to climb the rankings once again.
However, Richards knows that it won’t be easy. “Once I beat Gongora, I was in the top 10 with Ring Magazine and nobody wanted to fight me,” he said. “It’s just about me pushing on and getting highly ranked with a governing body so that people have no choice but to fight me.”
With his determination and skill, Richards is ready to make his mark in the super middleweight division once again. And with a potential showdown against Berlanga on the horizon, the future looks bright for the talented boxer.
