Pitbull Cruz Dominates and Captures WBA Light Welterweight Title
In a thrilling and dominant performance, Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz (26-2-1, 18 KOs) defeated Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero (15-2, 13 KOs) by an eighth round technical knockout to capture the WBA light welterweight title on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
From the opening bell, Cruz showed his intentions by landing a powerful left hand that shook Romero. The pressure from Cruz seemed to unnerve Romero, who began to fall apart both physically and mentally by the fourth round.
Despite landing some good shots, Romero had no effect on ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, who continued to attack relentlessly and hit him whenever he could get close enough. In the fifth round, Romero lost a point for excessive holding, which had been a recurring issue throughout the fight.
As the rounds wore on, Romero’s fatigue became evident, and he was unable to keep up with Cruz’s pace. This could be attributed to Romero’s lack of conditioning, possibly due to celebrating his previous victory too much and not getting back in the ring.
But it was Cruz who stole the show, overshadowing the main event fight between WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu and Sebastian Fundora. After the fight, Cruz expressed his joy and gratitude for winning the title for his family and Mexico.
“I was prepared for this. I wasn’t here to just fight. I was here to terminate him,” said Cruz. “I did my talking right here in the ring. And I did this not just for me, but for everybody that is here at T-Mobile Arena. There’s going to be a Mexican champ at 140 pounds for a long time.”
The 25-year-old Cruz’s performance was a testament to his determination and skill, solidifying his place as the new WBA light welterweight champion.
