The Next Generation: Emiliano Vargas Carries on the Legacy of His Father
As the son of former junior middleweight champion Fernando Vargas, 19-year-old Emiliano Vargas has big shoes to fill. But with his impressive record of 8-0 (7 KOs), it’s clear that he’s well on his way to making a name for himself in the boxing world.
Emiliano’s father was known for his fiery personality and exciting fights, and it seems that his son has inherited that same passion for the sport. In an interview with Kosport Magazine, Emiliano shared, ”I know the man who I step inside with wants to take my health away from me. I know that. If they want to talk, I can talk too. I have that side in me, and I get that from my dad being who he is.”
But while he may have inherited his father’s intensity, Emiliano is determined to make his own mark in the ring. He said, “There is only one Fernando Vargas. I will never try to be like him or have that chip on my shoulder, but I will never be disrespected.”
Emiliano’s father was a boxing cult hero, involved in some classic fights and memorable rivalries. When asked about his father’s career, Emiliano said, “I look back on his career, and I feel he was a voice for most Mexicans. He was here as a second generation. He wanted it all, and he was coming for it all, and he didn’t care if he took bumps along the way. I think he represented our culture beautifully and I want to do the same.”
But Emiliano is not just representing his Mexican heritage, he’s also proud to be American. He said, “I do not mind if they say that I am Mexican or the U.S. At the end of the day, I am grateful to be Mexican and American, so I represent both sides. Every time I fight, you will see that.”
Emiliano’s father may have been known for his explosive fights, but Emiliano is determined to make his own mark with his flashy boxing style. He said, “My dad threw something like over 1,000 punches in [the Ike Quartey] fight. He boxed well and was able to out-jab the jabber because Quartey did have a really beautiful jab.”
With his impressive record and flashy style, Emiliano is quickly making a name for himself in the lightweight division. But with that success comes added pressure, as he carries on the legacy of his famous surname.
Emiliano acknowledges the pressure, but he also knows that he has the support of his family behind him. He said, “My family is the biggest strength I have. I have two very loving parents who will support me in anything I want to do. My brothers, too, I know that they will catch a bullet for me and I would do the same for them.”
As for his future goals, Emiliano has his sights set on a world title in 2024. He said, “All the fighters at 135 or 140 can get it but I know that they are going to be in line to fight for world titles, too. So if there are guys in the way, they are in my way, so let’s make something happen.”
With his determination and talent, it’s clear that Emiliano Vargas is a rising star in the world of boxing. And while he may have a famous last name, he’s determined to make a name for himself on his own terms. As he said, “I believe I am one of those great fighters and I have sparred with these dudes at 135 and 140. I have tested my skills against the very best, and I know I can compete with them, and I feel I can dominate at this level.”
