Dalton Smith Ready to Step Up Against Jose Zepeda
British junior welterweight Dalton Smith is gearing up to elevate his career to the international stage as he faces former three-time world title challenger Jose Zepeda at the Sheffield Arena in Sheffield, England, this Saturday.
Smith, who has already secured British and Commonwealth titles, sees Zepeda as the next challenge in his progression.
“[Zepeda] has the experience, he’s been at a high level, (has) ring I.Q., but for me that’s nothing I can’t match,” Smith (15-0, 11 knockouts) shared with The Ring. “I just think stylistically it’s a good fight and I’m looking forward to it.”
Since turning pro in 2019, Smith has been deliberate in his approach, ensuring he doesn’t rush his development. Now, at 27, he believes he’s ready to make his mark in the competitive junior welterweight division.
“Definitely, and in the next couple of years I’m going to be coming into my prime,” he expressed. “I just feel I’m becoming that all-around fighter now and becoming a championship fighter.”
While aiming for the European title, Smith’s path was momentarily diverted by promoter Matchroom’s decision to prioritize another fighter. However, Smith remains focused on his upcoming bout with Zepeda and the potential for future opportunities.
“It’s a big fight in the U.K. it’s probably one of the main fights boxing fans and the public are talking about,” Smith noted. “Whatever the biggest fight is and makes the most sense is where I’m going to go.”
Despite uncertainties surrounding a potential fight with Azim, Smith remains determined to carve out his own legacy in Sheffield, following in the footsteps of boxing greats from his city.
“I feel I’m that next kid to take on that legacy and carry that torch for my city and keep the legacy going,” he affirmed.
With a crowd of 5,000 expected, Smith is poised to showcase his skills and prove himself among the top contenders in the 140-pound division.
“If I want to be a world champion and be the best, I’ve got to go through these guys and prove to people I am one of the top guys in the division,” Smith emphasized.
Conclusion:
Dalton Smith’s upcoming bout against Jose Zepeda marks a pivotal moment in his career as he seeks to establish himself on the international stage. With determination and skill, Smith is poised to make a statement and continue his journey towards becoming a world champion.
