The women’s NCAA tournament has been making headlines this spring, with record-breaking viewership and a surge in popularity. And according to Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, it’s all thanks to the “star power” of the players.
In an interview after the Lakers’ win over the Washington Wizards, James pointed to players like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, JuJu Watkins, Paige Bueckers, and more as the driving force behind the growing interest in women’s college basketball.
“These players are icons in the making,” James said. “They have the talent, the skill, and the charisma to capture the attention of viewers. And that’s what makes the women’s game so exciting to watch.”
The recent Elite Eight game between Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes and Reese’s LSU Tigers drew an average of 12.3 million viewers, second only to a men’s game between Duke and NC State. And while the men’s game may have had a higher viewership, James believes that the women’s game has something special to offer.
“The women’s game is just as exciting and competitive as the men’s,” James said. “But what sets it apart is the opportunity for these players to build a legacy at their college programs. That’s what makes the Final Four and Elite Eight so special.”
However, James also acknowledged the limitations that women’s college players face in terms of turning pro. While men can enter the NBA after one year of college, WNBA players must be 22 or have exhausted their collegiate eligibility. And for James, this is a missed opportunity for players like JuJu Watkins, who had a standout season for USC but is unable to enter the WNBA draft.
“It’s a different time for men and women in college basketball,” James said. “If I had a great season after my freshman year, I could go to the NBA. But for these women, they have to wait. And that’s a shame because players like JuJu deserve the chance to take their talents to the next level.”
But despite these challenges, James remains a dedicated fan of the women’s game and encourages others to tune in and support these talented players.
“Players like Caitlin, Angel, JuJu, and Paige are the future of women’s basketball,” James said. “And I can’t wait to see where their careers take them.”
